On Thursday, March 23, the Charter Group, with support from Student Council, hosted an assembly on Suicide Awareness and Prevention. We had two keynote speakers. One was Dr. Rebecca Schwartz-Mette from the University of Maine, and the other was Julia Hansen, a junior from Casco Bay High School. Dr. Schwartz-Mette spoke to the students about what they can do if someone they know is at risk, and Julia Hansen spoke about starting The Yellow Tulip Project, which raises awareness about mental illness, after having lost two friends to suicide the previous school year.
After school, Dr. Schwartz-Mette, Julia Hansen, Nichole Webber, and Stephen Bell, took part in a panel in my classroom, in order to answer any questions students and staff may have.
